As a film and digital wedding photographer I capture and coordinate countless engagement sessions every year. Can you guess the most common question I hear? You guessed it! "What should I wear"?
Finding the perfect dress for your engagement shoot or wedding reception can be challenging. Balancing luxurious aspirations with a practical budget is no easy task. For the bride-to-be who adores the high-end brands gracing literally every single TikTok, Pinterest or Instagram wedding inspiration we see - brands like Monique Lhuillier, Oscar de la Renta, Galia Lahav (my favourite), and Ines Di Santo exploring affordable alternatives can feel overwhelming. But don't worry! We are here to showcase some fabulous brands that are stylish, modern, and budget-friendly. Don't get me wrong - these brands are not replacements for the iconic gowns those brands bring. But we're here to tell you that you can look stunning and feel like a million bucks without emptying your wallet.
Let’s explore a few surprising but worthy options...
For Elegant & Sophisticated Brides Without the Hefty Price Tag
Meshki is emerging as an unsuspected contender in the bridal fashion world, traditionally recognized for their luxury approachable work lines and 'night-out' dresses. Currently the 'new kid on the block, they're making their mark in the wedding fashion arena slowly expanding their wedding and bridal offerings in a smooth and approachable way. Express shipping, fast customer service, a range of sizes, and easy returns - literally every convenience we could ever want. Each piece is designed with an emphasis on quality and style, making them a perfect choice for the modern bride.
As Meshki continues to test the brand's initial bridal offerings, they are set to redefine what approachable luxury means in the bridal fashion world, providing stylish options for brides seeking elegance without the extravagant price tag.
Having personally photographed their exquisite wedding gowns at shoots all over Italy and France I can personally speak to the high quality Meshki provides. Their dresses feature intricate designs, luxurious fabrics, and tailored fits that most definitely compete with higher-end labels. Prices range from $180 USD to $699 USD, providing various options that cater to different budgets while ensuring elegance.
Featured Style: Eileen Wedding Gown
Presenting the EILEEN Strapless Wedding Gown, a masterpiece of timeless elegance and grace. Boasting a strapless design, this wedding dress features an overlay bodice panel that adds a touch of sophistication and allure. The high-rise skirt accentuates your figure with its fitted bodice, while the centre-back zip ensures a seamless fit. Lined for comfort and adorned with a tulle underlay, this gown promises to make you feel like a princess on your special day. Say "I do" in style.
I photographed this exact dress at the Louvre in Paris - and it was STUNNING. We paired the dress with iconic puff sleeves from Anthropologie's bridal line (another great option) and a statement lace cathedral veil. Pair the dress with the Enchanted Pearl Drop Earrings $85.
Where a Classy Bride Meets Her Sexy Alter-Ego
Oh-so-romantic. Babyboo brings a playful edge to bridal wear, making it the ideal pick for the confident bride who is effortlessly feminine and elegant. Their bridal edit features dresses perfect for everything from engagement shoots to bachelorette parties and evening receptions. If you see yourself in a dress that embodies vintage glamour with a modern twist, Babyboo is the right choice for you. Think sexy necklines, dramatic waistlines, and statement bows. Don't take my word for it - look for yourself. I can confidently state my bank account has suffered multiple Babyboo shopping spress for 'just in case' dresses.
Prices at Babyboo range from $170 USD to $300 USD, allowing you to find chic dresses that won’t break the bank. Expect to find eye-catching designs featuring elegant pearls, classic bows, and feminine silhouettes perfect for achieving that classy yet sexy look.
Featured Style: Carrie Mini in White
It's all in the details. CARRIE is a design that's waiting to be forever yours, a stunning bridal piece perfect for your bachelorette, brunches and wedding parties. Designed with you in mind, step into your next chapter in this luxe crepe mini, made with a bubble shaped skirt and pearl-adorned bow that's detachable. Guys this dress is ICONIC. This show stopping style is complete with pearls trimming the high, wide boat neckline and the curved back. Pair the dress with little white pumps and the Davina earrings $75 to give those 90's icon vibes.
Chic Designs for the Understated Bride with Taste
Anthropologie's bridal selections are a treasure trove for brides-to-be, featuring their in-house line, BHLDN, alongside a curated assortment of stunning dresses from renowned designers such as OUMA Bridal, Jenny Yoo, WTOO by Watters, and Shona Joy, among others. The pricing for their gowns can vary widely, ranging from $250 to $5000, catering to a variety of budgets. However (don't stop reading yet - I promise theres a reason I mention them!) the true gem of Anthropologie's bridal offerings lies in their frequent sales, which often boast discounts of 40% to 60% on some of their most sought-after items, making it an ideal destination for brides looking to find their dream dress at an exceptional value. You can even click on 'SALE' then filter to 'wedding dresses' on their site - You're welcome.
I didn't give Anthropologie much consideration until a very good friend of mine showed me a wedding gown she was considering by WTOO by Watters that was 60% off! It was stunning - understated but so chic with a classic square neckline and intricate quality beading on the whole body. Since then, I crawl their (frequent) sales in search of bridal styles I'd use in future styled shoots. Yes - my closet is an insane collection of 'if I ever got married again' dresses. I have a problem. And their return policy (should your selection not workout) is second to none.
Featured Designer: OUMA
If you get a chance to try on an OUMA gown - do it. I photographed OUMA's show-stopping Serena Gown in New York City at the 620 Garden Loft & Rooftop venue (yes, the incredible venue you see all over Brides and Vogue Weddings!) and it was a dream to photograph! This dress - it's art - you have to see it in real life. OUMA is truly an artist and her collections showcase the feminine form and movement so well. There is a reason so many photographers and stylists use her pieces for photoshoots.
Exploring Other Affordable Options
While Meshki, Babyboo, and Anthropologie shine in offering quality and current designs, there are other tempting brands we've all heard of. Options like Azazie, Lulus, and Shein are popular among brides seeking budget-friendly attire. However, be mindful, as many fast-fashion brands may vary (like REALLY VARY) in quality and may not always deliver the elegance that discerning brides desire - leaving you stuck with a dress you don't feel great in and out money. As my husband always likes to remind me "we can't afford to buy it twice". Just proceed with caution on the fast fashion houses and in the very least - read a ton of reviews first!
Your Dream Dress Awaits
Finding the perfect dress for your engagement shoot or wedding reception doesn’t have to come at a high price. Brands like Meshki, Babyboo, and others mentioned prove that affordable options can be fabulous. By choosing from these and similar collections, you can achieve that high-end bridal look without overspending.
As you begin your exciting journey toward your wedding day, remember that your dress should reflect your personality and vision. At the end of the day - if you feel good in what you're wearing the confidence will look good.
Happy shopping!
